Tennessee football stock report following Week 3 win vs. Tennessee Tech
Stocks to buy
Velus Jones Jr.
Last week wasn’t a fluke. Velus Jones Jr. led the team in receiving with three catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. He had a key 45-yard touchdown run on a 4th and 3 play near midfield to put Tennessee football up 21-0 on TTU in the second quarter. Oh, he also averaged nearly 11 yards a punt return on three returns.
Jones ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, but it was called back. Still, all of this is legitimate. This was the first game Jones played in which he was healthy, and he’s by far the Vols’ best athlete at receiver. As a result, look for him to do more of these things going forward.
Punting
Paxton Brooks did not play in the game, and the punting suffered. Kolby Morgan averaged just 38.5 yards a punt on four punts, and that’s skewed, as he had one epic 55-yard punt that pinned TTU inside the 10-yard line. Otherwise, Morgan had three punts, none of which went beyond 40 yards and none of which pinned TTU even inside the 30.
However, it’s pretty obvious why this is a stock to buy. Brooks should be back for the Vols’ SEC opener against Florida, and this aspect of the game should improve dramatically once again. As a result, this is one area that looked worse than it truly is on Saturday.
