9. Florida’s ability to score in the red zone

A big issue with Florida is how they have struggled in the red zone. The Gators are ranked No. 100 in the nation in red zone scoring percentage, having gotten down their 12 times and only scoring nine of them. Twice they were stopped on downs, and another time Emory Jones was intercepted.

On the other hand, Tennessee football has been to the red zone 16 times and scored 15 times. The Vols are tied for No. 7 nationally in red zone scores. In four more red zone attempts than the Gators, they have failed to score a touchdown only one more time than Florida has failed to score in general.

Of course, UT’s one red zone failure was a bad one too, as the Vols were stopped on a crucial 4th and 1 late against Pitt. However, it’s safe to say they have the advantage here right now. Neither red zone defense is good, as both teams have not stopped an opponent from scoring down there, but both have held their foes to three field goals.

This may not be a huge difference, but red zone scoring has come up huge in the past in this game. Just go back to 2000, when the Vols had to kick three field goals inside the five-yard line and lost one of the most controversial games in this series by one score as a result.
