Tennessee football at Florida: 10 keys to the game
4. Will the Vols force any Florida interceptions?
Up until last week, Tennessee football hadn’t forced any turnovers on the year. The Vols still haven’t forced any fumbles, and that’s a huge deal for Dan Mullen’s team since Florida hasn’t committed any fumbles. As a result, you can pretty much cancel any likelihood of a Florida fumble happening this weekend.
On the other hand, the Gators are horrible at avoiding interceptions. Emory Jones has thrown five on the year. Only five teams have thrown more picks than Florida this season. An early one last week clearly cost them the game, as it spotted Alabama a 14-3 lead.
When Rocky Top finally figured out how to force turnovers, it came in the form of interceptions. Last week, the Vols’ defense forced four picks against TTU. Solon Page III had a pick-six, and Alontae Taylor almost had one. Jaylen McCollough and Tamarion McDonald had the other interceptions for Josh Heupel’s team. Those four put them at No. 21 for total picks on the year.
Now, it’s unlikely Tennessee football will force four picks against Florida, but if they can force just a couple, they could make this a game. TTU was prone to it just like Florida is, and the Vols cashed in. However, they have to avoid something else if that will give them any chance in this game.
