Tennessee football at Florida: 10 keys to the game
3. How many Vols fumbles will Florida force and recover?
Just as Tennessee football can intercept passes and Florida throws lots of them, the Vols fumble all the time, and Florida recovers lots of them. The Vols are two spots out of dead last in all of FBS play when it comes to holding onto the ball, as they have lost five fumbles.
Hendon Hooker has lost a fumble in each of UT’s three games. He even did it in mop-up duty against the Bowling Green Falcons. Joe Milton III has lost one in each of the two games he played. This is part of a major issue that comes with Josh Heupel’s system, but in no way should Rocky Top be this bad at taking care of the ball.
On the other side, Florida has already recovered two fumbles on the year. Now, that’s tied for No. 38 nationally with 34 other teams, but you have to give them credit for it. Also, Alabama didn’t have any fumbles last week, and that was never going to happen, so it’s a bit skewed.
If Tennessee football is going to have any chance, they have to force interceptions while avoiding these fumbles. Now, all five fumbles came after Cooper Mays left the opener against BGSU. He could be back Saturday at center, and that could boost the Vols taking care of the football and their running backs picking up yards.
