Tennessee football at Florida: Five key Gators
6’4″ 285 pounds; Hometown: Tampa, Fla.
Despite all the talk of Florida’s rushing attack, the top two players for Tennessee football to keep an eye on this Saturday will be on the Gator defense. Hey, it makes sense when you consider the fact that the Vols will be relying on Josh Heupel’s offense to win games.
A crucial part of UT’s offense that has shown itself to be vulnerable is pass protection. There is a reason that Joe Milton III and Hendon Hooker have each lost two fumbles in the backfield. Pitt, which is known for its pass rush under Pat Narduzzi, exploited this with five sacks, three quarterback hurries and nine tackles for a loss.
Because of all this, it’s pretty clear the Vols will have to watch out for a Florida defensive line that could shut down Rocky Top’s already-struggling rushing attack with the running backs and wreak havoc on passing plays. Zachary Carter is obviously the guy who fits that mold.
Carter leads the team in sacks with three and in tackles for a loss with six. He has the one forced fumble on the year, and we know Tennessee football has trouble taking care of the ball. Because of that, he’s the biggest matchup problem for the Vols. They have to keep an eye on him all game, as he and Elam could form a duo, with his rush leading to a forced throw that Elam intercepts.
