Tennessee football: Week 4 SEC and top 25 picks and bets
Gambling odds:
- Line: Florida -18.5
- Over/Under: 63.5
- Money line: Florida -1150; Tennessee +730
Nothing suggests Tennessee football should have any chance in this game. The Vols have questions over who will start at quarterback, and coming off a 56-0 win over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, their only halfway decent opponent, the Pittsburgh Panthers, beat them 41-34 in Knoxville. Pitt, meanwhile, just lost to the Western Michigan Broncos.
Josh Heupel’s team now has to face a program that has won 15 of 16 against it and beaten it by double digits each of the first three years under Dan Mullen. Jeremy Pruitt may be gone, but there’s no reason to believe anything is different when it comes to Tennessee-Florida.
On the other side, the No. 11 ranked Gators should be feeling pretty good after playing the Alabama Crimson Tide close. They have their own quarterback controversy, but they control their own destiny despite that 31-29 loss, so their morale should be high in this one.
Prediction
No, the Vols aren’t going to win. However, there’s a reason the line moved from 20 to 18.5 points this week. The Gators have never covered a spread greater than 14 points against UT since these teams began playing annually. Also, Alabama may be a bit overrated this year.
Despite playing much weaker foes, Tennessee football has a top five rush defense to somewhat neutralize Florida’s rush offense. Emory Jones has thrown five picks, and the Vols had four last week. They also have the better kicker. These things will be enough for them to cover. Take the over, though, as both teams will score a lot given the tempo Heupel likes.
Florida: 45 Tennessee: 30 (Tennessee +18.5; Over 63.5)
