3. Penalties came back.

Miscues on offense and special teams are bad enough. However, the nature of Josh Heupel’s offense is that it will generate lots of penalties, and players running it have to figure out how to limit them. Tennessee football failed on that front in miserable fashion Saturday.

The Vols and Florida Gators were both among the most penalized teams heading into the game. However, last week against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, UT had only three penalties, and there was hope that they were turning the corner. That was proven to not be the case based on what happened Saturday night.

Rocky Top committed 10 penalties for 85 yards. There was a punt in which they spotted 30 yards in penalties, one for targeting and another for unsportsmanlike conduct. Numerous delay of games arose too, including one near midfield in the second half that turned a 4th and 2 into a 4th and 7 and forced the Vols to punt.

Florida wasn’t great with penalties, committing six of them and surrendering 45 yards. However, the Vols were significantly worse, and while it probably didn’t make a difference in the outcome of this game, it’s a concern in terms of what this team is facing going forward.
