Offensive grades part II

Wide receivers: B-

JaVonta Payton had a 75-yard touchdown and a great catch on a 4th and 5 slant. Velus Jones Jr. had three catches for 64 yards. Those two could’ve made this grade an A. However, an awful drop by Jimmy Calloway that negated a perfect play-call and throw and would’ve been a touchdown was the worst play of the game. It single-handedly brought this grade to just above average.

Tight ends: B

Blocking from these guys wasn’t terrible on the outside. Jacob Warren again was valuable with two catches for 23 yards. He also should’ve had another catch that may have been a touchdown, but Hendon Hooker overthrew him. However, no receptions from Princeton Fant hurt Tennessee football in this. There just wasn’t enough from them for us to grade, so we go above average here.

Offensive line: C

Things were great on the outside. Darnell Wright laid an amazing block to set up Tiyon Evans touchdown on the screen. However, the interior was awful. Cooper Mays was rusty in his return and got hurt again. Josh Heupel leaving him in there resulted in poor snaps and allowed three sacks. Mays gets a pass for being hurt, but his play drug the whole grade down to average.

Overall offensive grade: B-

The Vols had over 420 yards of total offense. Sure, they only had 14 points, but it was the miscues that cost them. They were a missed field goal, a couple bad snaps and a bad drop away from at least 27 points. Add in poor clock management late in the first half, and they may have missed out on up to 35 points. By moving the ball, this grade is above average.
