Coaching grades

Offensive play-calling: A-

A botched flea flicker that injured Hendon Hooker brought this to an A-. However, Josh Heupel and Alex Golesh called a nearly perfect game. The screen to Tiyon Evans for a touchdown was the best call, but they also had a perfect fourth-down call that would’ve been another score on that Jimmy Calloway drop. They offensive play-called their way to over 30 points, even if they only had 14.

Defensive play-calling: A

Tim Banks’ first-half performance is one of the greatest defensive play-calling performances in Tennessee football history. It didn’t last, but that wasn’t his fault. The Vols’ just couldn’t stop the Gators’ rushing attack in the second half. They had the right plays on, but Emory Jones was just better. No blame lies with Banks on that front, though.

Overall coaching grade: B+

The play-calling is enough to keep this grade above average, as it was superb. However, there were some mistakes Josh Heupel made. Leaving two timeouts on the board in the first half as time running down forced him to try a 47-yard field goal was a huge mistake.

Heupel also punted it on 4th and 7 near midfield down by three scores in the fourth quarter, always a bad idea, and the 10 penalties are partially a reflection of coaching. As a result, while Tennessee football’s play-calling was great, lots of other mistakes were made, which is why we moved it down to a B+ instead of anything in the A range.
