We’re starting to get a clear picture of which tier each SEC team belongs in and just how many tiers there should be. Unfortunately for Tennessee football, the Vols clearly belong in one of the bottom tiers right now on the heels of their 38-14 loss to the Florida Gators, but they’ll have plenty of chances to move up that in the future.

Our SEC Power Rankings really have a variety of tiers, with one team in the bottom of bottom tiers and four more in the next to last tier. There’s a top tier involving four of the five undefeated teams left and a mid-level tier involving two of the 3-1 teams. We have a tier between those two with two 3-1 teams and one undefeated team.

What’s exciting, though, is five games this weekend involve two SEC teams in the same tier, including Tennessee football’s game, so this weekend will separate teams out. Until then, let’s take a look at where they stand now in our SEC Power Rankings following Week 4 of 2021.

. 1-3 (0-1). Previous: . Commodores . 14. team. 887

Last week: Lost to Georgia Bulldogs 62-0

To nobody’s surprise, the Vanderbilt Commodores are alone at the bottom tier. They are the only program to lose to an FCS school and the only one with a losing record. Their 24-21 win over the Colorado State Rams is one that came against a Group of Five team that is 1-3. Clark Lea always had a huge rebuilding job in Nashville, and that was evident on Saturday.

It’s one thing to lose to the Georgia Bulldogs, but Vanderbilt got destroyed. Lea is a defensive coach, and his team surrendered 62 points to another defensive coach. There’s a reason Vandy is still considered a sure win for Tennessee football later in the year.

Up next, though, is what is likely one final chance at a win, as they host the UConn Huskies, who are currently 0-5. After that, they visit Florida and then have a series of games against lower level SEC schools that will still all be losses, including at the South Carolina Gamecocks and then at home against the Missouri Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs.
