Last week: Lost to Florida Gators 38-14

You could probably make a case for Tennessee football being higher. Dropping them three spots in our SEC Power Rankings after losing to one of the best teams in the league may be a bit harsh. However, it’s also the case that we may have overrated them after a 56-0 win over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles last week.

Sure, the Vols led Florida 14-10 at one point in the first half, and they were a couple of miscues away from making this a game in the fourth quarter, but they benefitted from some Florida miscues and a key injury to Kair Elam. Simply put, they’ve got a lot to work on.

Getting out of September 2-2 was not the goal. However, even if they are not 3-1 like they seemingly needed to be to have a shot at a bowl game their first year under Josh Heupel, there are some opportunities at upset wins going forward, so they can’t panic yet.

One of those opportunities begins this week, as Rocky Top travels to Columbia, Mo. to take on Missouri. After that, they host South Carolina and the Ole Miss Rebels. They have to win one of those games, but winning the next two should really be the goal. If they only win one, then they have to upset the Kentucky Wildcats in November to have a shot at six wins.
