Tennessee football falls back down in Week 4 SEC Power Rankings
Last week: Lost to LSU Tigers 28-25
Inconsistency continues to plague Mike Leach and Mississippi State. His curious challenge in last week’s loss to LSU followed a curious decision to not challenge a punt return touchdown in their loss to the Memphis Tigers. This incompetence would seem to suggest that Tennessee football dodged a bullet not hiring him, but they seem like random anomalies more than anything else.
Anybody who knows Leach knows it takes him about three years to get his program winning consistently, and that’s going to be the case with MSU. Look, he’s still very close to being 4-0 right now, and his win over the N.C. State Wolfpack looks better now that N.C. State just upset the Clemson Tigers.
On the other hand, LSU is not a great loss, and his loss to Memphis looks worse after the Tigers just lost to the UTSA Roadrunners. Simply put, there’s less consistency with the teams the Bulldogs are facing than with the Bulldogs themselves.
MSU and Vandy are the only teams in the league with a non-Power Five loss, so they are near the bottom of our SEC Power Rankings. Things aren’t about to get much better either, as they are about to visit the Texas A&M Aggies and then host the Alabama Crimson Tide, after a bye, on Oct. 16, so 2-4 is likely midway through October.
