Tennessee football falls back down in Week 4 SEC Power Rankings
Last week: Defeated Georgia State Panthers 34-24
Yes, the Auburn Tigers are in the mid-tier of our SEC Power Rankings, but it’s just barely. Bryan Harsin’s team is flirting with being below Missouri, but they did at least beat the Georgia State Panthers, and we can’t ignore what they looked like the first three weeks of the season.
Struggling with GSU was enough for us to drop them, though. Tennessee football knows all too well how dangerous that program is under Shawn Elliott. Auburn’s win only came thanks to a blocked punt for a touchdown in the third quarter. That final touchdown was a pick-six when GSU was desperate, so the game was much closer than it looked.
On the other hand, the Panthers’ three losses are to Auburn, the Army Black Knights and the North Carolina Tar Heels, so they aren’t a bad team. Also, Auburn was within one possession of the Penn State Nittany Lions on the road last week and scored 60 points in our first two games.
As a result, they drop for now, but they won’t fall out of this tier. They have to prepare for a brutal October and early November to show who they are, though, with Georgia, the Arkansas Razorbacks and Texas A&M all coming up. Before that, though, they have a major test this week on the road against the next team in our SEC Power Rankings.
