Last week: Defeated Mississippi State Bulldogs 28-25

Just like that, Ed Orgeron has the LSU Tigers back on the rise. Blowing out Central Michigan has to count for something, as that’s a good team, but Mississippi State is also a dangerous team. Mike Leach got his career in Starkville started off by beating LSU last year, so scoring even a close win against him is a big deal for this program.

Orgeron being on the hot seat would be like Tennessee football putting Phillip Fulmer on the hot seat in 2000 amidst a rebuilding year and ignoring the national title two years earlier. It’s not a smart thing to do, and this is still a mid-tier team in our SEC Power Rankings.

You could make a case for LSU to actually be higher, as they have an SEC win. What’s hurting them is the fact that the UCLA Bruins, the one team to beat them, lost to the Fresno State Bulldogs, making them the only other team outside of MSU, Vanderbilt and Tennessee football to have a non-Power Five loss either directly or by one degree of separation.

We’re about to find out how much LSU has rebounded, though. They host an Auburn team this Saturday that struggled with Georgia State last week. Then they visit Kentucky before a brutal stretch against Florida, Ole Miss, Alabama and Arkansas.
