A 38-14 loss to the Florida Gators didn’t have all negatives in it. Tennessee football had a 14-10 lead in the second quarter and was two miscues away from this being a close game heading into the fourth quarter. However, the tale of two halves leaves a bit of confusion when it comes to breaking down the stock report on Rocky Top.

What do we take seriously from the game? It’s somewhat the opposite of the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, where we couldn’t derive too much from it that was positive. Should playing Florida close for a half mean anything when UF dominated so much in the second half?

Well, this is what we’ll try to figure out here as we take a look at what’s strong, weak, overrated and underrated about the Vols heading into Week 5 against the Missouri Tigers. As usual, our stock report will have separate slides for stocks that are up, stocks that are down, stocks to buy and stocks to sell. Let’s start with Tennessee football’s overall stock value.

Overall stock value: Falling

Although you can say the miscues kept them from being in the game, the Vols still failed to cover the spread against Florida this past weekend. Also, it’s not like Florida didn’t have its own miscues, including a busted coverage that led to one of UT”s touchdowns and then a fumble that killed at least another field goal.

As a result, while this game could have been 38-31, it also could have been 45-7. Miscues by the Vols only happen to stand out more because they are the team that can’t afford them. The same is true with injuries, as both teams had key injuries at the time.

Now, overall, there is good news with playing Florida close and having the chance to make it closer. We wrote about that here. That doesn’t stop the value of the program from falling at the moment, though. Let’s go ahead and dive in deeper, though, breaking down individual aspects of Tennessee football in our stock report following Week 4 of the 2021 season.
