Play-calling

Some of the in-game head coaching decisions were a bit questionable, but the actual offensive and defensive play-calling decisions were superb. Tim Banks called one of the greatest defensive first halves in Tennessee football history, and his unit was just to thin to be able to handle the onslaught Florida brought in the second half.

On offense, Heupel called a game that saw the Vols gain over 400 yards. He play-called his way to at least 24 points and potentially over 30 points. A bad drop and poor clock management by him as the head coach were different stories, but in terms of calling the plays, people should be encouraged by what they saw over the weekend.

Running backs

Tiyon Evans and Jabari Small combined to go for over 200 yards from scrimmage in the game. It’s only the second time they were on the field together all year. The first time, against the Bowling Green Falcons, they managed to gain over 100 yards rushing each. Given that fact, there is a lot to be encouraged about with these two.

Taking that into account, these two are lethal. Both had over 50 yards rushing in the game. Small still isn’t fully healthy yet, but he had 59 yards on 11 carries, averaging nearly five and a half yards a carry, and he also had a 22-yard catch. Evans, meanwhile, had 50 rushing yards and 71 yards receiving, including a 47-yard touchdown run on a screen.
