Veteran receivers

Over the past two weeks, JaVonta Payton and Velus Jones Jr. have emerged for Tennessee football. They have combined to catch 11 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Payton led the way with two catches for 82 yards, including a 75-yard TD reception, at Florida, but Jones added three catches for 64 yards.

Here’s the problem, during this success, half of it came against a winless FCS program. The other half did come at Florida, but the Gators played last weekend without Kair Elam, their best defensive back. Payton’s 75-yard TD was off of a busted coverage that wouldn’t have happened with Elam in the game. As a result, this unit will likely struggle soon enough.

Pass blocking

Lots of the criticism of the blocking in the Vols’ loss last weekend was on the interior. However, the pass blocking had its own issues. It just got masked because of that screen pass that Darnell Wright played so well to send Tiyon Evans to the end zone on.

Outside of that, Tennessee football did allow three sacks. This aspect of the game was all graded poorly by PFF, and it’s not getting the criticism it deserves right now. If it doesn’t improve, Josh Heupel could have an even harder time getting his offense off the ground.
