Tennessee Vols morning report: Women’s basketball preseason begins

It truly is the fall now. The Tennessee Vols’ football season is in full swing, and both basketball programs are gearing up for the start of their seasons. Everybody missed the consistency that came with this last season, so it’s a welcome return.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with coverage of the women’s basketball program beginning to gear up for the start of the season. That began on Monday, and then press conferences took place on Tuesday. Speaking of press conferences, though, there are plenty for us to cover on the football front from Tuesday.

Baseball also made the news with more scheduling updates, as did individuals who earned recognition in softball and soccer. We’ll close with ongoing events in men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. Let’s start with football and women’s basketball, though.

Coaches, players continue preparations for South CarolinaUTSports

As the Tennessee Vols football team continued practice Tuesday, two assistants and four players spoke with the media. Offensive coordinator Alex Golesh, defensive coordinator Tim Banks, wide receiver Cedric Tillman, offensive lineman Cade Mays and defensive linemen Matthew Butler and Omari Thomas were all on hand.

"After back-to-back road games to begin conference play, Tennessee football returns to Neyland Stadium Saturday to host divisional foe South Carolina. The Vols took Haslam Field Tuesday to commence preparations for the SEC home opener, set for a noon kickoff on ESPN2."

Kellie Harper talks start of preseason – Jack Foster, SI.com

A week after the men’s basketball program began its preseason, the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball program took the court to prepare for the year. Head coach Kellie Harper spoke with the media Tuesday about this upcoming season.

"Since Kellie Harper came to Rocky Top in 2019, the Lady Vols have gone 19-8, and their most recent NCAA tournament effort fell short when Michigan beat Tennessee in the second round.This year, the Lady Vols will be without star player Rennia Davis, having lost her to the WNBA, but Kellie Harper has optimism that her squad can be right back among the top teams in the SEC."

Baseball announces 2022 schedule – UT Daily Beacon

On Tuesday, the Tennessee Vols baseball team announced its full schedule for 2022. UT will play 56 games, 19 of which are against teams that made the NCAA Regionals last year.

"37 of the Vols’ games are at Lindsey Nelson Stadium — where recently announced expansions to the left field seats are underway, 15 of the games are on the road, and four of them are at neutral sites.Tennessee will open its season with a nine-game, non-conference homestand, starting with a three-game series against Georgia Southern from Feb. 18-20."

Softball places 16 among All-America scholar athletes – NFCA.org

The Tennessee Lady Vols softball team had 16 players recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes for 2020-2021. Honorees must have a 3.5 GPA or better for the academic year.

"Over 8,800 student-athletes were named 2021 Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes, the Association announced on Tuesday afternoon. With the highest total in Association history, it marked the second consecutive year (2018-19) achieving the 8,000-plus plateau."

Thanks in large part to her efforts against the Texas A&M Aggies this past weekend, Tennessee Lady Vols redshirt sophomore Jaida Thomas was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week. This is the first time the forward made the team.

"Winning in College Station is no small feat, and it’s what Tennessee managed to pull off over the weekend. Thomas scored twice, including the winner, in a 3-1 victory against Texas A&M."

ITA All-American Championships continue – WeAreCollegeTennis.com

Two singles events and one doubles event involving four Tennessee Vols men’s tennis players highlights the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships Wednesday after three singles win and a doubles win Tuesday. The women’s team kicks off their championships today.

"Fans can follow along with the men’s tournament on the Tulsa website. Live scoring will be provided by Tennis Ticker for the women’s tournament and will be available prior to the start of play."

Golf programs continue Blessings Collegiate InvitationalBlessingsCollegiate.com

With a score of seven-under, the Tennessee Vols men’s golf team enters the final round of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in fourth place. The women’s golf team is in 10th place at the event, hosted by the Arkansas Razorbacks at the at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., with a score of 42 over. Scores for all 10 participating teams can be found here.

"The Blessings Collegiate Invitational is a 54-hole stroke play competition, with the men’s and women’s teams competing on the same course and in the same conditions throughout the week.  The comprehensive tournament field includes a lineup of distinguished programs from each of the Power 5 Conferences as well as one American Athletic Conference team."
