Tennessee Vols morning report: Black uniforms returning

We’ve almost reached the weekend, and this time, Tennessee Vols football fans get to be excited about it given the state of the program after last week’s 62-24 win over the Missouri Tigers. Some flare being added to the excitement only makes it better.

That flare is what leads our morning update on Rocky Top, as UT made a splash with its new fashion reveal Wednesday. We’ll touch on that along with multiple press conferences with different coaches and the confirmation of a UT legend set to be honored.

Beyond football, though, we’ve got a preview in soccer, recaps in men’s and women’s golf and ongoing coverage of men’s and women’s tennis to bring you, so there’s plenty going on right now in Big Orange Country. Let’s start with that football news, though.

UT unveils black jerseys – Dan Harralson, VolsWire.com

In 2009, the Tennessee Vols football team shocked the world when they came out in black jerseys for a game against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Well, a black uniform combination is back. UT unveiled its new all black uniform combination, along with the players’ reactions, on its official Twitter account Wednesday.

"Ahead of Saturday’s game, Tennessee introduced its new dark mode uniforms.The dark mode uniforms consist of a white helmet with black outline and black face masks, black jerseys and black pants."

Josh Heupel talks South Carolina at SEC teleconference – SECSports

During his weekly SEC teleconference Wednesday, Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel talked about the state of the program ahead of its Saturday matchup with South Carolina. Here’s a bit of what he said.

"“I think the way our practice habits improved, and focus and attention to detail, and it showed up in the ballgame last Saturday. Excited about this one. Got a good South Carolina football team coming to town.”"

Glen Elarbee talks offensive line on ‘Vol Calls’ – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

Offensive line has been a concern at times for Tennessee football this year, but it looked good last Saturday. On Wednesday, UT line coach Glen Elarbee talked about the state of the unit on ‘Vol Calls.’ Here’s a bit of what he said about the depth of the position.

"“The next guys had to step up, had to jump in. This week it was Ollie (Lane). It’d been King (Kingston Harris) before that. It’d been different guys. Dayne (Davis) had to jump in. Everybody’s had to just go.”"

Al Wilson to be honored Saturday against South CarolinaUTSports

What’s been known for a few weeks has now been officially confirmed. UT and The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame announced Wednesday that former Tennessee football linebacker and 2021 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Al Wilson will be honored Saturday when the Vols host South Carolina.

"The NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute program, which began with the inaugural College Football Hall of Fame Class in 1951, has become a hallowed tradition, and to this day the singular events remain the first of numerous activities in the Hall of Fame experience.During the NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes, each electee returns to his respective school to accept a Hall of Fame plaque that will stay on permanent display at the institution."

Soccer set for matchup with Florida – Andrew Peters, UT Daily Beacon

Coming off last week’s 3-1 win over the Texas A&M Aggies, the No. 12 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team returns home to face the Florida Gators. UT comes in with a 10-1 overall record and 3-1 SEC record.

"Florida (3-6-3, 2-1-1) comes to Knoxville following a 1-0 loss to Ole Miss last week. The Gators have had a shaky start to the year, but Pensky is careful not to overlook them."

Golf programs wrap up Blessings Collegiate InvitationalBlessingsCollegiate.com

The Tennessee Vols men’s golf team finished fourth at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the Arkansas Razorbacks at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., with a total score of 863, one under par. Meanwhile, the women’s team finished 10th with a score of 928, or 64 over par. Scores for all 10 participating teams can be found here.

"The Blessings Collegiate Invitational is a 54-hole stroke play competition, with the men’s and women’s teams competing on the same course and in the same conditions throughout the week.  The comprehensive tournament field includes a lineup of distinguished programs from each of the Power 5 Conferences as well as one American Athletic Conference team."

Tennis programs continue ITA All-American Championships – WeAreCollegeTennis.com

On Wednesday, the Tennessee Vols men’s tennis team had one duo and one individual advance to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships in doubles and singles play respectively. Rebeka Mertena’s singles victory was the only match of the day for the women. Play resumes Thursday on both sides.
