One of the closest series in the SEC the past decade once again takes place Saturday. Tennessee football is back on Rocky Top for its SEC home opener against the South Carolina Gamecocks, a battle of first-year head coaches.

Josh Heupel’s Vols come into this game on the heels of a shockingly impressive 62-24 win over the Missouri Tigers. That was their first Power Five win of the season and a rebound from their 38-14 SEC-opening loss to the Florida Gators.

On the other side, South Carolina is coming off an ugly 23-14 win over the Troy Trojans under first-year head coach Shane Beamer. They are still searching for their first Power Five win. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee football’s Saturday matchup.

Last week’s game between the Vols and the Tigers was one with huge bowl implications for both, and with the win, UT is now in position to reach six wins. However, this week’s game is exactly the same. The winner will be on track for six wins, while the loser will have to pull off an upset somewhere down the road to get there.

That’s not the only similarity. In addition to having first-year head coaches, both UT and South Carolina are a year removed from firing former Nick Saban defensive coordinators, Will Muschamp and Jeremy Pruitt respectively.

Add in the fact that they have the same record, and this is a very intriguing matchup. It’s easy to see why eight of the past nine games in this series have been decided by one possession, including seven decided by three points or less.
