Tennessee football: Checker Neyland, black jerseys and how Vols should schedule their gimmicks
2. Smokey Greys: First home game vs. SEC team in October or November
Yes, it’s time to bring the Smokey Greys back. Say what you want about Butch Jones, but this orange and gray combination was epic for Tennessee football. Oh, and it did combine with Checker Neyland when the Vols beat Florida in 2016. They also had them on in their comeback over Georgia in 2015 and their Music City Bowl win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2016.
A staple of the Smokey Grays was that they would take place in early October. There’s a reason for that. Orange is a fall color, and the grayish backdrop of the Smoky Mountains are much more accented when the fall arrives.
Well, when they’re brought back, their appearance should be contingent on the number of October home games they have. If they only have one October home game, then it has to be in November, and that’s fine as the grayish backdrop is even more accented by then. These jerseys should have happened last week, when the Vols hosted South Carolina. Y
You could even go as early as the first home game after the Autumnal Equinox, which occurs any time from Sept. 20 to Sept. 22, but they feel more proper with the October or November crispness. Checker Neyland and the Smokey Grays could line up with this combination, as they did when the Vols beat Florida in 2016.
