Tennessee football: Checker Neyland, black jerseys and how Vols should schedule their gimmicks
1. Black alternate uniforms: Last home game before Halloween
This is why the Smokey Grays may need to alternate. If Tennessee football only has one home game in October, that needs to be the game in which they bring out their alternate black uniforms, the ones they did last week against South Carolina.
The black jerseys should coincide with a blackout game. It’s certain that they will never coincide with Checker Neyland, so Vol fans should wear all black to the game when these are worn. Also, Danny White should work with the SEC to make sure that the Vols’ final home game before Halloween is always a night game.
Look, these jerseys give the perfect Halloween feel, just like the Smokey Grays bring the perfect fall feel. Both should be rolled out once each year, and the black uniforms need to always be the game closest to Halloween. If the game takes place at home on Halloween, as it did on Oct. 31, then the Vols need to do black jerseys with orange pants. Otherwise, they should do all black.
If White used these suggestions this year, Tennessee football would have worn retro jerseys against the Bowling Green Falcons, they would have Checkered Neyland against Pitt, they would have won the Smokey Grays against South Carolina and they would be debuting their black jerseys Saturday. That should be the move for the future, and it’s the perfect way to generate buzz.
