Tennessee football vs. Ole Miss: 10 keys to the game for Vols and Rebels
6. First quarter Vols vs. vs. 2nd quarter Rebels
Before Tennessee football even visited Missouri, we were documenting how dominant they had been in the first quarter. However, the Vols have since taken it to another level. They have outscored their last two opponents 56-3 in the first quarter, jumping out to a 28-3 lead against Mizzou and a 28-0 lead against South Carolina.
Their woes after that continue, though. Lots of it continues into the second half, but South Carolina outscored them in the second quarter, just as the Pittsburgh Panthers and the Bowling Green Falcons did. That’s been a bad quarter for UT in general.
It’s been the opposite for Ole Miss. They have struggled in the first quarter as of recent, being shutout by both Arkansas and Alabama in that quarter. However, as Arkansas proved, they take off in the second quarter. They outscored the Hogs 21-7 in that quarter.
In every game but their Alabama loss, Ole Miss’ best scoring quarter has been the second. As a result, the question in this game is how dominant the Vols can be in the first quarter vs. how dominant the Rebels can be in the second quarter. Both need to pour it on during their best quarters to have a chance.
