Tennessee football: Fan outrage vs. Ole Miss was culmination of these events
2. Ole Miss receives two favorable spots
Again, neither of these calls were bad calls, it just seemed like they always went a certain way. Matt Corral ran for two first downs in the first half, one on 4th and 3 and the other on 3rd and long, that both worked in his favor.
The 4th and 3 one came on Ole Miss’ first touchdown run. Up 10-9, early in the second at the UT 47-yard line, Corral took the snap and ran right up the middle for the first down. He was given the spot about a yard in front of the marker. Now, he probably got the first down, and it would have been upheld upon review, but it was based on a spot on the field.
We bring that up because those refs easily could have spotted him the ball short, and that call would have been upheld too. Just like the two spots that went against Tennessee football, they had to stick with the call on the field. Oh, and they didn’t review this one either, giving Corral and Ole Miss more of a break since they could stay in rhythm.
On Ole Miss’ second touchdown drive, Corral converted a 3rd and 12 with a 13-yard run to the Ole Miss 31. He was ruled out a yard short at first, but replays showed he never stepped out before crossing the first down marker. Everything about the call was right. When you combine those with what just so happened to be two unfortunate spots for UT, though, you can understand the anger.
