In typical Josh Heupel fashion, Tennessee football may have lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday night, but the Vols were still able to generate plenty of highlights. Big plays by them kept the game entertaining, and it actually allowed the game to stay within one score after the first few minutes of the fourth quarter.

For the most part, Alabama dominated en route to its 15th straight victory in the series and Nick Saban’s 16th straight victory over UT. Two weeks removed from their loss to the Texas A&M Aggies, they weren’t going to slip up again.

However, they made plenty of mistakes until the fourth quarter, and the Vols were able to generate plenty of big plays to keep it interesting. Let’s take a look at some of those notable plays. These are Tennessee football’s highlights in their loss to Alabama.

Velus Jones Jr. 8-yard TD catch from Hendon Hooker

JaVonta Payton 57-yard TD catch from Hendon Hooker

Kenneth George Jr. recovers Jameson Williams fumble forced by Kamal Hadden

De’Shawn Rucker blocks James Burnip punt

Cedric Tillman 70-yard TD catch from Hendon Hooker

Many of these big plays kept the Vols in the game, but in other cases, they couldn’t cash in on them. For instance, the Vols only got a field goal off of that blocked punt even though they had a chance to tie it in the second half. Not cashing in on that was disastrous.

Failure to cash in on the fumble in the first half was also problematic but a lot more understandable. The big takeaway from that play was the fact that they were able to stop Alabama from scoring and taking control heading into halftime.

Of course, the two deep touchdown passes were part of the game’s storyline. Tennessee football had trouble running the ball but connected on multiple deep balls. They were pretty plays too. If the Vols can continue that after the bye into their final stretch of the season, they may be able to have a strong finish in Heupel’s first year.
