Tennessee football: Five things for Vols to focus on during bye
4. Limiting miscues
On the surface, Tennessee football actually isn’t that bad when it comes to miscues. The Vols did go three straight games without a turnover, and their offense went four straight games without one. Also, for a while, they were getting significantly better on the penalty front. Turnovers and penalties were abundant the first two games but have gotten much better since.
However, they haven’t been perfect, and if UT doesn’t have an issue on one front, it has an issue on another. Against Ole Miss, Velus Jones Jr. spotted Ole Miss its first touchdown because he muffed a punt. Joe Milton III then accidentally ran out of bounds with no time left on the clock when the Vols trailed late in the game 31-26.
Those two alone were bad. However, the next week, at the Alabama Crimson Tide the Vols’ penalty issues returned. They committed 12 penalties and surrendered 98 yards on them. Hendon Hooker had an interception in that game as well, which he hadn’t had since the Pitt game.
At the Florida Gators, Jimmy Calloway had a fourth down drop on a sure touchdown, Chase McGrath missed a field goal. Those plays kept it from being a close contest into the fourth quarter. All teams have miscues, but the Vols can’t afford them as much given who they are.
