Tennessee football unchanged after bye in Week 9 SEC Power Rankings
Last week: Lost to Auburn Tigers 31-20
After surviving Arkansas and Tennessee football before handling LSU pretty easily, excitement moved just a little too quickly for Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss. The offense was hit with a dose of reality last week, as they suffered a two-score loss to Auburn. It was their lowest point-total of the season, although Alabama could have held them to less if they wanted to.
Ole Miss is still one of the better teams in our SEC Power Rankings, and unlike Kentucky, we haven’t dropped them below any teams with three losses or more. However, that loss was devastating, as it likely ended any chance they had at winning the SEC West. They technically have an outside shot at it, but it’s almost impossible.
Still, the former Tennessee football head coach is trying to build and maintain a program in Oxford. He’s got plenty of talent for a strong finish to the season. A New Year’s Six bowl game, a top 10 finish and a couple of big upsets are still on the table for him the rest of this year.
It starts with an easy tune-up game Saturday against former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze as the Liberty Flames come to town. They and Vanderbilt should be sure wins to make 8-4 a minimum, and Mississippi State on the road is a likely win. That leaves a key home game a week from Saturday against the next team in these rankings.
