Tennessee Vols morning report: Coordinators, players talk Kentucky

Early November is always among the most exciting times to be a Tennessee Vols fan. Basketball season is in the process of kicking off, football season is in full swing, and preparations for the upcoming holidays are underway.

Our morning update on Rocky Top involves football season still going on along with UT gearing up for basketball season. We’ve got interviews with two football coaches and three players, and there’s another football player who is on an award watch list.

On the basketball front, there’s a women’s basketball exhibition preview to bring you. Beyond those sports, we’ve got a soccer recap and news surrounding the women’s golf program, so there’s plenty to discuss. Let’s start with football.

Three players, two coordinators talk Kentucky – UTSports

Preparations for the Tennessee Vols matchup at the Kentucky Wildcats continue. Both coordinators and three players spoke with the media Tuesday to preview that game.

"With Tuesday practice in the books at Haslam Field, the Tennessee football team is a step closer to their weekend bout with No. 18 Kentucky in Lexington at 7 p.m. ET Saturday evening.Defensive coordinator Tim Banks, offensive coordinator Alex Golesh, defensive back Alontae Taylor, running back Jabari Small and defensive lineman Omari Thomas took the podium for questions before the weekend SEC showdown."

After emerging from a walk-on to seeing significant action in recent weeks, Tennessee Vols football redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Dayne Davis is among 88 nominees for the Burlsworth Trophy. The award is given annually to the best player who began his college career as a walk-on.

"In the award’s twelfth year, the Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas Walk-On and All-American offensive lineman. Burlsworth’s life is also the subject of a major motion picture, “GREATER”, which was released in 2016."

Lady Vols take court for exhibition matchupMaria M. Cornelius, GoVols247

A week ahead of their season opener against Southern Illinois Salukis, the Tennessee Lady Vols women’s basketball team will take on the Georgia College Bobcats in an exhibition Wednesday night. This is the first exhibition for the program in two years.

"Tip time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Thompson-Boling Arena, and the game will be livestreamed online.The probable starters for Tennessee – a lineup that seemed probable after media members watched a couple of practice sessions in October – will be the “Double Jordans” of junior Jordan Horston and graduate transfer Jordan Walker at guard, senior Rae Burrell at small forward and graduate transfer Alexus Dye and junior Tamari Key inside."

Soccer advances to SEC Championship semifinals – SECSports

The No. 12 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team defeated the Florida Gators 5-2 Tuesday to advance to the SEC Tournament semifinals. UT will face the No. 3 seed Ole Miss Rebels Thursday, who defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 1-0.

"UT’s five goals ties the program record for goals scored in an SEC Tournament game, and it’s the Vols’ first win at the tournament since a 2-0 victory over Ole Miss in the first round in 2016.Redshirt-sophomore Jaida Thomas turned in a brace to lead No. 2 seed Tennessee (16-2-0) in scoring. Senior Mackenzie George, freshman Taylor Huff and senior Abbey Burdette also got on the score sheet for UT."

Women’s golf coach named for Palmer Cup – ArnoldPalmercup.com

In her first year as head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols golf program, Diana Cantú has been selected as one of two coaches on the International team at the 2022 Arnold Palmer Cup. Cantú will join England’s Phil Rowe of the Cal Poly Mustangs on the international side. Kory Henkes of the Ole Miss Rebels and Jim Ott of the Illinois Wesleyan Titans will lead the U.S. side.

"The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and began at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Fla., in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men’s and women’s university/college golfers matching the United States against a team of International players."
