Everything seems to be moving in the direction of Tennessee football. The Vols are 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the SEC, and they are visiting a team that is 6-2 overall, 4-2 in the SEC, in the top 20 and beat them 34-7 at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. last year.

Despite all of that, the Kentucky Wildcats are getting no respect in this matchup. The WynnBET betting odds moved the line from Kentucky -1.5 early in the week to a pick’em, and now the College GameDay crew is putting their faith in the Vols.

With GameDay in Cincinnati for the matchup between the Bearcats and Tulsa Golden Hurricane, Desmond Howard and Lee Corso both picked Tennessee football Saturday. Special guest Nick Lachey of 98 degrees, who is from Cincinnati, also picked the Vols. Only Kirk Herbstreit picked UK.

Corso and Lachey are right to bring out the emotion of the Vols in this game. Ending their self-conducted investigation into NCAA violations and not self-imposing sanctions could indeed give them some momentum. Also, Howard is right to be impressed by how the Vols have played in previous games, and they should be even better coming off a bye.

However, what they all left out, funny enough, is Kentucky’s struggles. Herbstreit, despite picking the Wildcats, ironically made the best case for UT in this game. Both teams are on a two-game losing streak, but UK is now giving off the vibe that it’s nowhere near as good as its record says.

The Wildcats won four of their first six games by a touchdown or less. One of those was against an FCS opponent, the Chattanooga Mocs, and the others came against the Missouri Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks, two of the three worst teams in the SEC.

There’s no shame in losing to the Georgia Bulldogs, but compound that with losing last week 31-17 to the Mississippi State Bulldogs off a bye, and it’s easy to see why there’s less respect for Kentucky right now than the Vols. That’s even with UT also being on a two-game losing streak.

Joining Herbstreit was the fan vote, which favored Kentucky by 74 percent. But all of those other factors combined with the history of this series is why it would make sense for the majority of the GameDay experts to pick Tennessee football in this one.
