In an SEC East battle between teams on two-game losing streaks, Tennessee football will visit the Kentucky Wildcats fresh off a bye week for a border battle. It’s the Vols’ second straight road game and their final road game of the 2021 season.

Kentucky comes in ranked No. 18 in the AP Poll and College Football Playoff rankings but No. 17 in the Coaches Poll. They are coming off a 31-17 loss on the road to the Mississippi State Bulldogs, which they suffered fresh off a bye. Before their bye, they lost 30-13 to the Georgia Bulldogs.

Meanwhile, Tennessee football’s last outing as a 52-24 loss at the Alabama Crimson Tide, a game that was within a touchdown in the fourth quarter. That followed a heartbreaking 31-26 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels. Here is all the information you need for Saturday night’s matchup.

This is the 117th meeting in the rivalry that used to involve the Beer Barrel Trophy, making it the third most played series in the SEC, behind the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry (Auburn Tigers vs. the Georgia Bulldogs) and the Egg Bowl (Ole Miss Rebels vs. the Mississippi State Bulldogs). Tennessee football leads the series 81-26-9.

However, Kentucky won last year 34-7 at Neyland Stadium. Ironically that was the first time since 2016 UK had been an underdog in the series, but they had lost the previous two games as favorites. That game began a six-game losing streak for the Vols and a downward slide for the program as they stumbled tp 3-7 and eventually fired Jeremy Pruitt due to NCAA violations.

This year, the Vols will be looking to get revenge for that game, but they’ll also be looking for their biggest win in their first season under Josh Heupel. However, UK still has a chance to make a New Year’s Six Bowl, which would be a huge accomplishment in Mark Stoops’ ninth year on the job.

With four wins within a touchdown en route to their 6-0 start, they also want to prove they are good and not just lucky. A big win in this game would somewhat prove that, but they would have to do it with style points.

After this game, Tennessee football closes the season with three home games against Georgia, the South Alabama Jaguars and the Vanderbilt Commodores. Kentucky will visit Vanderbilt, host the New Mexico State Aggies and visit the Louisville Cardinals. The winner of this game will be in the driver’s seat to finish second in the East to UGA.
