Tennessee football has the chance of a lifetime vs. No. 1 Georgia
By Abby Dalton
This was alway going to be a game Tennessee football fans were looking forward to all season, but now the anticipation has dialed up to 100. The No. 1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs are visiting Rocky Top just as UT is trending uphill fast.
Book it. This is going to be a matchup that the Dawgs are not prepared for. I can guarantee that this will be one of the only articles you come across making such strong claims. However, is there any reason to suggest I am wrong?
Georgia’s defense is a very sound group. It’s historically great, truly living up to the three No. 1 ranked recruiting classes Kirby Smart has brought in. With this in mind, they have yet to face a team that has an offense like Tennessee football.
Josh Heupel’s offense is unique and really can’t be compared to anyone. Their tempo is much faster than anything UGA has seen, as they run nearly three plays per minute. Nobody else Georgia has faced runs more than two and a half plays per minute.
Hendon Hooker is playing his best football right now. He is hitting receivers downfield at a super fast pace and is doing better at keeping a visual on the open gaps, and he’s able to run the ball when defenders are crashing the pocket. Simply put, Hooker has handled the pressure exceptionally well.
Sure, offensive line still needs to really get it together in terms of not allowing sacks. It has been struggling the last couple of games on that front. Also,Communication is crucial and needs to be talked about more. The reason the Vols can get caught with so many unnecessary penalties in different games and is inconsistent in that field is because of that specific issue.
Still, the good news for UT is that these are things that can be fixed. Heupel’s first team has had to learn some things the hard way in order to grow and overcome their weaknesses, but they have shown dramatic improvement throughout the year.
For the Vols to pull it off this weekend, they must be smart with the ball. If they only had the ball for thirteen minutes against Kentucky, they may have a less amount of time against Georgia. That means every play is highly important in pulling off the upset.
This game is something that the Bulldogs are not losing sleep over, but the people of Knoxville are ready. Vol fans know what Tennessee football is capable of doing, and they know how incredibly powerful Neyland Stadium can be at full capacity. Saturday on Rocky Top is going to be one for the books. Mark.
