3. Offense moved the ball but stalled.

The expectation was that if Tennessee football scored, it would be due to big plays on offense. There was no way that Georgia’s historically great defense would let the Vols drive down the field. Well, Georgia’s defense let the Vols drive down the field. Shockingly, that’s how they got their points and their yards.

UT ran 10 plays to go 77 yards on its first drive. The Vols ran 13 plays to go 76 yards on their field goal drive. They finished the game holding the ball for over 27 minutes, double what they did last week against the Kentucky Wildcats, while running 84 plays. Gaining 387 yards against this defense is nothing to be ashamed of.

However, then there’s the other side, and it started with that field goal. Too many drives stalled. This wasn’t in the second quarter, where UT just got dominated. They had a chance to make it close in the third, though.

UGA was held to just a field goal in the third quarter. Meanwhile, UT got into Georgia territory on every drive in the second half, three times getting into the red zone, and they only came away with a touchdown. On their first two drives, they had a turnover on downs. Then they lost a fumble. Those things proved costly.
