Last week: Lost to Mississippi State Bulldogs 43-34

Everything was laid out for Auburn. Not that they knew it at the time, but Texas A&M was set to lose to Ole Miss later in the evening, meaning they would have been back to controlling their own destiny in the SEC West had they just held onto a 28-3 lead over Mississippi State. Well, it just wasn’t in the cards.

Auburn blew that lead and shockingly lost 43-34, pretty much ending all hope of playing for the SEC Championship. Yes, ironically, they blew a 28-3 to cost themselves a shot to go to Atlanta of all places. I  It also dropped them significantly in our SEC Power Rankings. You can’t ignore a two-game losing streak.

On top of that, Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel has surpassed Bryan Harsin in terms of first-year head coaches who have done the best job this year. Heck, Shane Beamer may have done so as well. Sure, those coaches have easier schedules and worse records by one game, but they inherited much bigger messes.

Also, they may all finish with similar records. Harsin and Auburn visit Beamer and South Carolina this week, and that could be a tougher out than they realize. Then they have to host Alabama, so a red-hot start could end with a brutal finish, and 7-5 is best-case scenario.
