Tennessee football vs. South Alabama: 10 keys to the game
1. How many fumbles will South Alabama force?
Yes, we are back to turnovers to finish this game, but similar to the quarterback issue, this is another major concern facing Tennessee football. Amidst all the turnovers mentioned on both sides, this is the only true mismatch, and it favors the Jaguars.
For the year, the Vols have lost seven fumbles. They are No. 90 in the nation in fewest fumbles lost. Now, that is skewed by the fact that they lost five fumbles in their first three games. However, after that problem seemed to go away, it has come back since the bye. Hendon Hooker has lost two fumbles, and the Vols have put the ball on the ground four times.
On the other side, just as they are elite when it comes to intercepting the ball, South Alabama is elite at forcing fumbles. They have recovered eight on the year, and they’ll definitely be looking to force a few fumbles against UT. Most by the Vols come at quarterback with miscommunication on RPO plays or sacks allowed, but South Alabama can take advantage of either of those.
If Tennessee football is going to make sure South Alabama doesn’t make this a game, it has to take care of the ball at all costs. This has to be the biggest focus for Josh Heupel, as the return of this problem could cause major problems Saturday.
