Tennessee football’s top five performers in Vols’ 60-14 win vs. South Alabama
1.5 TFLs, 2 QB hurries, 6 tackles (4 solo)
While there was a competition between Kurott Garland and Trevon Flowers to see who would make the list based on making key big plays, there was also competition between Roman Harrison and Theo Jackson to see who would make the list based on playing elite throughout the game. Both had their moments for Tennessee football.
Jackson stepped up at nickel in a huge way, coming away with two tackles for a loss and six overall tackles, three of which were solo. However, the same principle that applied to Flowers applies here. The secondary overall may have been the weakest spot of the team, as it did allow South Alabama to move down the field through the air at times.
As a result, Harrison gets the nod. This guy was a star all night. Sure, he only had one and a half tackles for a loss, but he forced a lot of plays in certain directions, which allowed the Vols to shut down the run. Harrison was more consistently dominant than anybody.
Byron Young and Tyler Baron have been the more standout edge rushers, shifting Harrison to the side, but he made the most of his opportunities Saturday. Also, mobile quarterbacks have been torching the Vols recently, but Harrison’s play didn’t allow Desmond Trotter to get anything going with his legs.
