Tennessee football’s top five performers in Vols’ 60-14 win vs. South Alabama
17-of-20, 273 yards; 7 carries, 21 yards; 3 total TDs
It was impossible to ignore Velus Jones Jr.’s contribution to Tennessee football Saturday given how many ways he had an impact. However, the rest of the skill players only got a mention but didn’t make the list because of the help they had. That starts with the running backs, which was attributed to a key offensive lineman.
The receivers, meanwhile, all played well, and that’s a tribute to the quarterback, Hendon Hooker. Completing 85 percent of your passes and averaging 13.7 yards per attempt is insane. Hooker has been efficient all year, but he took it to another level in this game.
Jones and Cedric Tillman both hit the 100-yard mark, as Tillman had five catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. Princeton Fant stepped up at tight end with three catches for 40 yards and a touchdown, and Jacob Warren added four catches for 33 yards. All of this production came down to Hooker in the end, though.
Throughout the night, Hooker trusted his receivers to make big plays, and he was also able to run and make plays when needed, including a key third down scramble in the second quarter. As a result, he was once again Tennessee football’s best player on the night.
