Tier 2: Possible

4. Duke’s Mayo Bowl (Dec. 30; Bank of America Stadium; Charlotte, N.C.)

Again, this is a location factor. The payout for this one is nearly $1 million better than the Liberty Bowl, and Knoxville is a couple hours closer to Charlotte than it is to Memphis. As a result, this could definitely be where Tennessee football ends up.

If two teams reach New Years Six bowl games, this becomes a strong possibility. Three teams is more likely at this point, but that doesn’t completely take this one off the table depending on what other bowls do. UT is probably shooting for higher, but this isn’t a bad one.

3. Outback Bowl (Jan.1; Raymond James Stadium; Tampa, Fla.)

Similar to the Texas Bowl this has a payout of over $6 million. Unlike the Texas Bowl, the Outback Bowl isn’t in direct proximity to any team that would get a bid over Tennessee football. Georgia and Alabama are going to New Years Six bowl game. The Auburn Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks are both 6-6 and distinctly below the Vols.

Now, the only reason it isn’t on the top tier is that Arkansas or Texas A&M, whichever team doesn’t reach the Texas Bowl, could still land in the Outback Bowl. Also, if the New Years Six takes just two SEC teams, either Alabama or the Ole Miss Rebels drop down to the Citrus Bowl, and then Kentucky is in competition for this game.
