Tennessee football rooting guide for 2021 Conference Championship games

6. Sun Belt Championship

Appalachian State Mountaineers over Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns

The principles for this championship game aren’t exactly the same as the one for the Conference USA Championship game. That’s because while the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns are 11-1, the Appalachian State Mountaineers are 10-2. As a result, the winner of this game on either side has a great chance to finish ahead of Tennessee football.

However, it’s more clear-cut in this case since Louisiana is actually in the top 25. They are No. 24 in the College Football Playoff rankings, No. 20 in the AP Poll and No. 21 in the Coaches Poll. As a result, the Vols need them to fall down a peg.

Now, the C-USA title game likely assures the Vols a spot ahead of both teams if Western Kentucky beats Texas San Antonio. However, they will need the winner of this game to lose their bowl game for that to be a possibility, as Appalachian State, unlike UT, is receiving votes in both polls.

Appalachian State beating Louisiana will knock both out of the top 25 while they still receive votes, and then both teams losing their bowl games will knock them behind the Vols. Simply put, Rocky Top needs a bit more help beyond this title game when it comes to these two teams en route to a top 25 finish than it would need from the C-USA title game.
