For the second time since the end of the regular season last Saturday, Tennessee football picked up a 2022 commitment. Once again, he is a defensive back, this time one from Alabama who could shore up what will be a position of need in the near future.

Jourdan Thomas, out of Montgomery Catholic Prep School in Montgomery, Ala., became the 17th commitment for Josh Heupel’s 2022 class. A three-star across all services, Thomas stands between 6’0″ and 6’2″ and weighs in the range of 185 to 190 pounds.

Three days before choosing UT, Thomas decommitted from the Mississippi State Bulldogs, where he had been committed to since April of this year. He announced his decision to join Tennessee football Saturday night on Twitter.

Thomas follows the commitment of Georgia defensive back Christian Harrison, who committed to the Vols earlier in the week and is the son of NFL legend Rodney Harrison. Those are the only two defensive backs in the class right now.

Going forward, UT needs a lot of help in the secondary. Kenneth George Jr. and Theo Jackson have run out of eligibility, and Alontae Taylor is entering the NFL Draft. Safety Trevon Flowers does have a year of eligibility left but just finished his senior season, so he could be gone too.

Simply put, Thomas and Harrison together could help bring much-needed depth to the secondary. While Harrison is listed as a cornerback, Thomas is listed as a safety, but he could play multiple positions. Here is a look at his highlight reel.

As you can see, Thomas is truly a complete safety. He loves to tackle and stop the run, but he has a feel for where to be in coverage. Based on these highlights, he appears to be more of a strong safety, but he could play some nickel too.

After no commitments during the regular season through the first 11 games, Tennessee football has picked up three over the past two weeks, including Harrison and Thomas. This commitment came amidst a slew of other visits, so Heupel could have plenty more roll in very soon.
