2. One streak continued, three streaks begun by matchup

What stands out about all of these streaks is who Tennessee football continues to come across in its bowl games. The Vols may run through the entire Big Ten before it’s all over, as they keep facing teams from that league.

This is the Vols’ fifth straight bowl game against a Big Ten foe. It’s also their second straight against a school from Indiana, as their last bowl game, two years ago, came against the Indiana Hoosiers in the Gator Bowl. Before Indiana, they had three straight years where they went to bowl games and faced Big Ten schools.

They met the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2014 version of the Gator Bowl (TaxSlayer Bowl), the Northwestern Wildcats in the 2015 Outback Bowl and the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the 2016 Music City Bowl. More importantly, they won their last four, so they’re going for five straight wins.

On the other side, this is Purdue’s second straight bowl game against an SEC school. That’s because it’s the second straight time Purdue’s bowl is the Music City Bowl. This is where they went at the end of the 2018 season. They lost in a 63-14 blowout that year to the Auburn Tigers, so they’ll obviously be looking for a better performance this time.
