After splitting two games against Power Five schools away from home over the past week, Tennessee basketball returns to Rocky Top to face another mid-major. They’ll be looking to get back in the win column in the process.

Coming off a loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York, the Vols will host the UNC Greensboro Spartans Saturday afternoon. UT comes in at 6-2, ranked No. 13 in the AP Poll and No. 14 in the Coaches Poll.

In their first season under head coach Mike Jones, UNC Greensboro comes in with a 7-2 record and on a three-game winning streak. This is their first game in December, as their last outing was a win on Nov. 30 against the Elon Phoenix. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s matchup.

Tasked with replacing Wes Miller, who took over the Cincinnati Bearcats after 10 years at UNC Greensboro, Jones has done a good job maintaining the success Miller built. Last year, UNC Greensboro won the Southern Conference regular season and tournament title, the second time in four years they did that and their third SoCon Tournament title in five years.

Jones has come in after 10 years as head coach of the Radford Highlanders, where he won two Big South regular season championships his final three years on the job and won either the Big South regular season or tournament title in three of the past four years. He’s leading a team with just two starters back and four new transfers in the rotation.

Taking all that into account, UNC Greensboro could definitely be a tough out for the Vols. They can’t sleepwalk their way to victory Saturday afternoon, especially given how poorly they shot the ball earlier in the week.

This is the first of three straight road games for UNC Greensboro, who will next head to the Baltimore area for games at the Towson Tigers on Tuesday, Dec. 14 and at the UMBC Retrievers on Thursday, Dec. 16. Tennessee basketball’s next game is at home against the USC Upstate Spartans on Tuesday, Dec. 14.

Prediction

Although UNC Greensboro is a threat, Tuesday was a wake-up call for the Vols. It’s not likely they have a second straight poor shooting game, from three. That combined with UNC Greensboro starting out rusty is why UT covers, so take Tennessee -21. UT’s threes are why the game hits the Over 128.5. The score will look something like this: Tennessee 81 UNC Greensboro 55.
