A random bowl in Alabama is the perfect setting to host a 7-5 MAC team and a 7-5 Independent team. The Lending Tree Bowl may be the least interesting game here, to be honest, but hey, all bowl games are worth enjoying to a degree.

This matchup features another team with a head coach who was a rumored candidate for Tennessee football last year. Hugh Freeze has become a high-profile coach with the Liberty Flames, and all signs point to him building a sleeping giant in Virginia there. Liberty could be the evangelical protestant version of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

On the other side, the Eastern Michigan Eagles are back in a bowl under Craig Creighton after missing out on one last year. In non-COVID related seasons, they have now reached bowl games three straight years and four of five years.

Prediction

Both schools beat three teams at .500 or better and have one loss to a team below .500. However, Liberty is at full strength and more battle tested. Freeze just has a better team, so take Liberty to cover despite ending the year on a three-game losing streak, and their defense will keep an EMU team that hasn’t broken 26 in three games from scoring, so take the under.
