Two mediocre 6-6 Group of Five teams will face off in the same place where last year’s Tennessee football coaching candidate, Jamey Chadwell, has built a name for himself as part of the Myrtle Beach Bowl presented by TaxAct. At least it’s the first bowl game we’re covering involving the American Athletic Conference.
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane have reached their second straight bowl game under seventh-year head coach Philip Montgomery. He also made bowl games his first two seasons, but there was a three-year drought in between. It took a three-game winning streak and an upset over the SMU Mustangs to get here, but they are riding high.
On the other side, Ricky Rahne just led the Old Dominion Monarchs to a bowl in their first ever FBS season. After a 1-6 start, they were dead in the water, but then they finishd the year on a five-game winning streak. That’s an amazing accomplishment, and it makes this C-USA vs. AAC matchup somewhat intriguing. ODU
Prediction
Both teams are playing much better ball right now, and Tulsa is the better team. As a result, they’ll win this matchup. However, the game is closer to Old Dominion, and Tulsa just lost lots of staff members while many other players have entered the transfer portal. As a result, they won’t cover, and without their defensive coordinator, ODU scores enough for the game to hit the over.
Tulsa: 34 Old Dominion: 27 (Old Dominion +9.5; Over 52.5)
