Tennessee football makes cut for elite 2022 New Jersey DB Davison Igbinosun
One day after having a surprisingly strong early signing period, Josh Heupel is now looking toward National Signing Day. He’s already got Tennessee football trending for elite prospects who will commit between now and then, this time a 2022 defensive back from New Jersey.
Rocky Top has made Union, N.J. defensive back Davison Igbinosun’s top four. A four-star on Rivals and 247Sports but a three-star on ESPN, Igbinosun stands between 6’2″ and 6’3″, and he weighs between 180 and 185 pounds. He will commit Jan. 8 in the All-American Bowl.
Listed as a cornerback across the board, Igbinosun has the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Ole Miss Rebels, and Kentucky Wildcats on his list along with Tennessee football. He announced the schools and his commitment date Wednesday morning on Twitter.
With the departures of Alontae Taylor, Kenneth George Jr. and Theo Jackson, cornerback specifically is definitely a position of need for the Vols going forward. Although they have three defensive backs committed for 2022, only two of them are officially cornerbacks.
On top of that, none of them come with the rating that Igbinosun comes with. As a result, he’d be a huge boost for a class that already had a major boost based on what Heupel was able to do on the trail for the Vols Wednesday.
Ironically, the Vols will have to lure Igbinosun away from multiple coaches they have connections to. Former UT head coach Lane Kiffin is one, as he’s now with Ole Miss, and Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano, who almost landed on Rocky Top in 2017, is another one.
Currently, Ole Miss is the majority favorite on the Rivals Future Cast and the 247Sports Crystal Ball. Rutgers is the second favorite on the 247Sports Crystal Ball and a plurality favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast. As a result, Tennessee football has an uphill climb to land this guy, but based on what they just did on the recruiting trail, there is reason to believe in Heupel.
