Wasabi Fenway Bowl (Wednesday, Dec. 29)

Virginia Cavaliers over SMU Mustangs

On the same day as this game, the Virginia Tech Hokies and Maryland Terrapins face off in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. With both teams at 6-6, there are no top 25 implications there. VT could be a recruiting rival for Tennessee football, but they’re playing this game with an interim coach and undergoing a coaching change, so that game will have no impact on that either.

As a result, that bowl game is not relevant to UT fans. Similar to Virginia Tech, the Virginia Cavaliers are playing this game with an interim coach and undergoing a coaching change. As a result, this game isn’t relevant to UT when it comes to recruiting either.

Also, UVA nor the SMU Mustangs are receiving votes in either poll. Taking that into account, this one is barely relevant. However, UVA is 6-6 on the year, and SMU is 8-4. For just a little insurance, Vol fans should root for UVA to win this game.

There’s no chance of UVA finishing ahead of UT if both teams win. SMU, on the other hand, may get a nod somewhere with one more win than the Vols as an American Athletic Conference team. To make sure that doesn’t happen, it’s pretty obvious Vol fans should root for UVA.
