One of the best rivalries in women’s basketball resumes Saturday evening. The undefeated Tennessee Lady Vols will be playing for a top five spot with the chance to prove they are every bit as good as their record indicates.

Ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll and No. 9 in the Coaches Poll, Kellie Harper’s team welcomes the No. 3 ranked Stanford Cardinal to Rocky Top. UT is undefeated and coming off an 84-60 win over the Georgia State Panthers last Sunday.

Tara Vanderveer’s team, meanwhile, is on a three-game winning streak and coming off a 68-42 victory over the UC Davis Aggies this past Wednesday. Here is all the information you need for the Tennessee Lady Vols’ crucial matchup.

This is the 38th meeting between the two schools and the 27th with both of them ranked in the top 10. It’s also the welcome return of this series, as the two weren’t able to face off last year due to the way COVID shortened their schedules.

Rocky Top should already be in Stanford’s spot during this game. They have two wins over the two teams that beat Stanford, the Texas Longhorns and the South Florida Bulls. Texas beat Stanford at Stanford, and USF beat them on a neutral site.

Somehow, though, Stanford is the higher-ranked team in this one. UT will have to continue fighting for respect with Rae Burrell still hurt, but winning this game would do wonders for them on that front. It would certainly propel them into the top five when the next rankings are released.

After these two face off, the Tennessee Lady Vols have two home games against in-state schools: the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Monday and the Chattanooga Mocs the following Monday. They will then begin SEC play Thursday, Dec. 30. Stanford will visit the South Carolina Gamecocks Tuesday before beginning Pac-12 play on Dec. 31.
