Tennessee football vs. Purdue: 10 keys to the Music City Bowl game
4. Cade Mays health vs. Georgie Karlaftis opt-out
This would have been the matchup of the game if both were playing. Tennessee football has listed Cade Mays as the starter at right tackle, but it’s not clear if he’ll be able to go. Given the fact that he is likely a high NFL Draft prospect and could opt out, it may not make a lot of sense for him to play in this game, even if he decides not to opt out and come back next year.
On the other side, though, Georgie Kalarftis was an elite defensive end for Purdue all year. He led the team in tackles for a loss with 10 and was second in sacks with four and a half. Add in four pass deflections, two forced and recovered fumbles, a defensive touchdown and 39 tackles, 28 of which were solo, and it’s safe to say he did it all.
If Mays is good to go in this game, it’ll be a huge advantage for the Vols. However, if he’s severely limited or decides to simply not play, the team that adjusts to their absence on this side of the ball best will be the one with the advantage at least on the ground.
At right tackle, Mays has proven himself all year. Without him, either Javontez Spraggins or Dayne Davis will have to occupy the spot. Whichever issue has a bigger impact in this game will then have a huge impact on who actually wins.
