Despite losing to the Purdue Boilermakers 48-45 in overtime in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl, Tennessee football obviously had plenty of highlights. The Vols forced three turnovers and had six touchdowns. Of course they would have lots of highlights, and there are quite a few players who played a role in generating those highlights.
This may be a game that most Vol fans would like to forget, and the ending play when they had it on offense, where Jaylen Wright was ruled short due to an arbitrary forward progress decision, will leave many people upset. However, that doesn’t mean that there weren’t fireworks on UT’s side throughout the game
Let’s take a look at some of those fireworks from the Vols’ final game of Josh Heupel’s first season. Hey, at the beginning of the year, even these fireworks didn’t seem possible, so take some positives from this. Here are video highlights from Tennessee football in their loss.
Hendon Hooker 41-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Tillman
Hendon Hooker 61-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Tillman
Kamal Hadden interception
Hendon Hooker 31 yard pass to Jalin Hyatt, 24 yard pass to JaVonta Payton
Jabari Small 2-yard touchdown run
Hendon Hooker 15-yard touchdown pass to Velus Jones Jr.
Byron Young interception
Trevon Flowers interception
Jabari Small 60-yard run
Hendon Hooker 13-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Tillman on 4th and goal
Hendon Hooker 58-yard pass to Princeton Fant
Hendon Hooker 2-yard touchdown pass to Jalin Hyatt
Obviously, the only highlight any Tennessee football fan wants to talk about is this one, where forward progress ruled Jaylen Wright short on a 4th and goal despite him not being down and no whistle being blown. It clouded this game in controversy.
Beyond that controversy, though, it’s pretty clear Hendon Hooker was the guy generating all the highlights for the Vols. He threw for five touchdowns. However, Cedric Tillman was right there doing the same thing, catching three touchdown passes. Those two will make for an epic duo with both coming back next year.
Jabari Small and Jalin Hyatt also both helped generate a few highlights, but Hooker and Tillman were the biggest stars. Josh Heupel obviously deserves tons of credit for his offensive play-calling as well, even if it got questionable at times. Outside of all that, Jaylen Wright generated the biggest highlights with that one play, which cost the Vols in their 48-45 overtime loss.
