Tennessee football: Photo gallery from Vols’ Music City Bowl loss to Purdue
Nobody on Rocky Top obviously wanted to see what happened to Tennessee football on Thursday. The Vols lost the Purdue Boilermakers in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl, seeing Josh Heupel’s first season with UT end in a 7-6 record while Jeff Brohm, whom the Vols almost hired in 2017, led Purdue to its best record at 9-4 since 1998, when Drew Brees was there.
What hurts Vol Nation worse is that this game ended on controversy with the refs ruling Jaylen Wright short of a touchdown on a 4th and goal from the one due to forward progress despite them never blowing the whistle. That’ll be all anybody can talk about.
Beyond the call, though, blowing a 14-point lead will also hurt. Still, amidst all of that, this bowl game is worth looking back on. Tennessee football was back in a postseason outing with a first-year head coach, and they were part of a fun game to watch. Here are some of the notable photos throughout the day in Nashville.
Let’s all keep some perspective despite this loss. Remember, UT had to replace a ton of talent from last year’s 3-7 team. Josh Heupel was entering a new era, and the Vols spent nearly the whole season under investigation by the NCAA with the threat of not making a bowl game at all definitely on the table.
It was also just a fun day. Even if this heartbreaker was similar to Tennessee football’s 2010 Music City Bowl loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels under Derek Dooley, being able to take part in the festivities and having the game so close to home certainly meant a lot to the program.
Rocky Top may not have walked away with the win, and losing to a Big Ten team is always frustrating to SEC fans. However, Tennessee football should be fine long term, and given what was expected at the beginning of the year, they have every right to be happy about how the day went.
