A day after the men’s Tennessee basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss in their SEC opener, the Tennessee Lady Vols open league play against the same team. They’ll be playing it at home and will obviously be hoping to achieve a different result.

UT will host the Alabama Crimson Tide. Led by head coach Kristy Curry in her ninth year, Alabama comes into this game on a seven-game winning streak, but their last two games have been canceled. They haven’t played since beating the the Sam Houston Bearkats over two weeks ago.

On the other hand, Rocky Top comes into this one ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll and No. 9 on the Coaches Poll, on the heels of back to back 50-plus point wins over in-state Southern Conference opponents, the ETSU Bucs and Chattanooga Mocs. Here is all the information you need for the Tennessee Lady Vols’ first SEC game.

Broadcast info

Curry has slowly been building up Alabama as a program since she took over nearly a decade ago. It finally culminated with their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1999 last year, and tey made it to the second round before losing to the Maryland Terrapins.

This year, they have had to replace all three leading scorers from last season, However, they returned Brittany Davis, who is now their leading scorer after missing last year due to being pregnant. Adding Mississippi State Bulldogs transfer JaMya Mingo-Young and returning starter Megan Abrams taking a leap forward has also helped.

All of this together has resulted in Alabama having a solid start to the season. Their only two losses are to the Tulane Green Wave and the Duke Blue Devils, and neither is a loss to be ashamed of, so this is a dangerous team.

Meanwhile, UT is still chugging along without Rae Burrell. There is no timetable for her return, but she is reportedly getting better and now taking part in more drills. Meanwhile, Jordan Horston missed Monday’s game due to a non-COVID related illness and will be a game-time decision for this matchup.

After this game, the Tennessee Lady Vols will next visit the Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday, Jan. 2, while Alabama will next host the Auburn Tigers that same day. SEC play is now fully underway for both basketball programs, and that’s definitely exciting.
